I always forget that Lysa's books are like slow cooker meals: you need time in between chapters and thoughts to really let it marinate and get tender. This is on my need-to-read-it-twice list. The first few chapters of the book are definitely worth the time to read it again.I always forget that Lysa's books are like slow cooker meals: you need time in between chapters and thoughts to really let it marinate and get tender. This was a cute book. I read it mostly because my favorite illustrator and artist did the cover art for the book, but in terms of the story, finding yourself while having to live in the shadow of your seemingly impressive sisters through an epic adventure is always a good plot. This was a cute book. I read this book mainly because I'd already read "No Offense" before I found out it's part of series/collection of books. The number one thing I liked about this book is that Bree finally finds someone who listens to her, believes her, and defends her about what happened to her. I don't know that there's many people who wouldn't appreciate this aspect of the story. I also liked that judgements was a theme in the book. Throughout the book, Bree focuses on not judging others for their life decisions, especially since so many factors go into the decisions people make for themselves. I also like the fact that Bree downplays the incoming storm until all of the locals convince her to take it a little more seriously. Finally, I liked that there's a wealthy family on the island who takes care of their community in times of crisis. There's so much to like about this book. I'm so excited to read the next book in this series! I loved that Kwame incorporated trauma and storytelling as topics into this book. I even found a line from it that sounded so much like life in 2020: "Grown ups are always going on and on about the future, but it's the now we have to suffer through. It's hard thinking about next week when today is punching you in the face."I'm so excited to read the next book in this series! Okay, the beginning of the book was hard to get through. There were little to no answers, Bree's going through the anger, depression, and bargaining stages of grief almost on a rotation, and you're mostly just reading through it and thinking, "Seriously? Who are these people? And when is Bree actually getting her homework done?" The last 10-20 or so chapters of the book, though, caught me by complete surprise. Parts of it was still confusing, but the book moves lightning-fast towards the end. I'm still reeling from the shock, even though I half expected it. I can't wait for the second book.Okay, the beginning of the book was hard to get through. This book is a lot like Children of Blood and Bone, but with differences. I'd almost say the world created in this book could be the history, future, or a parallel universe to Children of Blood and Bone. Also, the ending! ALSO I heard it's going to be a movie adaptation and it'll be a trilogy book series with another book coming out soon. This book is a lot like Children of Blood and Bone, but with differences. This book was so interesting! There were a number of times I thought I knew who the bank robber is, and I can't honestly say I know exactly who they are still. I laughed at the joke about Hawaiian pizza and Zara is funny sometimes, too.

I liked this book. I think it had enough twistedness to it to not veer too much into a mystery novel, enough romance to not veer completely off into a romance, and a lot of character.

Despite that there is a lot of divorce and infidelity in this book, there are some really important conversations about the type of domestic violence and abuse that it brings up. I think the book is phenomenal in the simple fact that it brings up a topic that rarely gets brought up in literature.Despite that there is a lot of divorce and infidelity in this book, there are some really important conversations about the type of domestic violence and abuse that it brings up.
