After first aiding a bride who has materialized inside the TARDIS, the Doctor, still haunted by the loss of Rose, finds a new companion in Martha Jones when her hospital is whisked to the Moon. The two: travel to Shakespearean England; a traffic jam far in the future; battle the Daleks in Depression-era Manhattan; investigate a scientist's claims of immortality; are trapped in a spaceship hurtling into the sun. Then, Martha must rescue an amnesiac Doctor from the bounty hunting Family. Next, aided by cryptic clues from the Doctor, a young woman faces off against living statues. Finally, when the TARDIS is thrown to the end of the universe, the Doctor is reunited with Captain Jack, and events are set in motion which lead to the Master's reign on Earth.
