Stephanie Plum is still working for her cousin Vinnie. Her latest "skip" is Loretta Rizzi an old schoolmate, wanted for armed robbery. Stephanie finds Loretta and convinces her that since this is her first offense, she probably does not want to blow her own brains out, but go to court and take the hand-slap Stephanie assures her that she will get. Loretta agrees to be bonded out, but only if Stephanie will pick up her son from school if something should go wrong at the bonding. What could go wrong? Just one small detail, Loretta has no assets to secure the bond. Stephanie soon finds herself in charge of the teenaged boy named Zook, listening to wedding plans for Lula and Tank, in search of Loretta, (has she been kidnapped?), and desperately in search of stolen money, rumored to be buried near the house of Joe Morelli, Stephanie's boyfriend.
