Everyday Picture Books by Black Creators

Representation matters. Books can serve as "mirrors" which allow readers to see characters and situations that reflect and validate their own life experiences. Similarly, books can serve as "windows" which allow readers to see characters and situations that may differ from their own experiences, enabling them to broaden their world view and build empathy. This list features exemplary books for young children created by Black authors or illustrators featuring contemporary Black characters engaged in everyday activities. 1/2023; JK
