Many people are not aware that English land was occupied by the Nazis during WWII. The German occupation of the Channel Islands lasted for most of the Second World War, from 30 June 1940 until their liberation on 9 May 1945. The Bailiwick of Jersey and Bailiwick of Guernsey are two British Crown dependencies in the English Channel, near the coast of Normandy. Hitler saw it as an opportunity for a bit of PR – he wanted to prove that the Germans could run an occupation without the abuses of power and violence that were happening elsewhere. He considered the Channel Islands to be his ‘stepping stone’ to the British Isles. At the same time, for five years the residents lived an existence that wasn’t completely free. They couldn’t speak freely, they were living under curfew and they were often struggling for food. After D-Day [the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944], they were cut off and began to starve. Towards the end of the war, the question wasn’t whether the allies would win, but whether they would die of starvation before the island could be liberated. Although the Germans treated the local people reasonably well, they imported slave workers from various European countries to build the fortifications on the island. A large number of these people were Russians who were treated particularly badly by the Nazis, who viewed them as “Untermenschen” (sub-human). History Extra The German occupation of the Channel Islands has had surprisingly little cinematic attention down the years. "Another Mother’s Son" is a hugely welcome redress of that oversight. Moreover, it tells an extraordinary true story, that of Louisa Gould (Jenny Seagrove), a middle-aged shopkeeper in a rural Jersey village. Daily Mail Louisa after learning that her own two sons were killed at sea has an opportunity to hide and attempt to save a Russian prisoner - another mother's son. Great and moving story. Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby
