This book is hilarious! It is also poignant in its graphic description of a boy enthralled by nature on the island of Corfu (before aviation brought mass tourism and retirement development to eliminate natural habitats and the peasant society). Readers should turn to Wikipedia to find out the meaning of passing references to Marie Stopes and Hester Stanhope. Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) became an animal collector for zoos, the founder of a captive breeding sanctuary for endangered species, and a wildly popular author and TV personality in the 1960s - 1980s.
