The action sequencing is off, the plot is convoluted, and characters are left dangling. A weak entry in a once-strong series.
And study the practices of the aristocracy! Since Maisie wasn’t born into the nobility, she wouldn’t be known as Lady Margaret, but would instead be Lady James. Look to the Wikipedia entry on Princess Michael for an explanation. For historical perspective, look at Harriet Vane’s formal title after she married Lord Peter.
