If you don't appreciate remakes of your childhood holiday classics into creepy dark snarky or downright ugly films that we will learn in years to come have scarred kids for life, if you are not a hallmark type of movie fan, then you might like this bit of fantasy/reality. Is it considered fantasy if it doesn't really make reality any better? We've all had a rough couple of years - I'm thinking a new holiday movie that pretends we aren't all a little older & wiser because of it would be too depressing. The characters I liked best (over the top immigrant mom and year round christmas shop owner) are, I have since been told, so stereotypical as to be offensive. I just thought they were loud mouthed women trying to be in charge of their own space. A review by MaryAnne Johanson pointed out that Kate is the Eleanor Shellstropp of the story; I otherwise couldn't figure out why I liked her - and why I didn't want to. Other than that, Patti Lupone?! cameo. Oh, and the handsome guy who tells us to "look up". I'm going to watch this next year, too.

Better than expected. Funny and cute.

It's all so disconnected...…unreal, silly, etc etc ? I couldn't stick it out. After 45 minutes switched it off.
There are so many better movies out there.

It seems to start out as a kind of Hallmark rom-com, but, with Emma Thompson writing it, you can be pretty sure it doesn't end that way. Although there are no direct nods to "A Christmas Carol" (well, maybe one), there are a great many similarities. Definitely deserves to be a Christmas classic. (Well, I suppose "Die Hard" and "A Christmas Story" set the bar pretty low on that one, but I'd definitely rate this higher than "It's a Wonderful Life.")

Move over, Love Actually, there's a new British Christmas tearjerker in town!

Emilia Clarke (as main character Kate) is FANTASTIC. Emma Thompson (as Kate's mom) is so WACKY. And Henry Golding (the enigmatic Tom) is WONDERFUL.

Surround yourself with George Michael/Wham! music, blanket yourself in nostalgia, and cozy up with this Christmas story jam-packed with British talent. Definitely a new favorite of mine, and one I'm going to keep in my holiday rotation.

A year after watching this movie, I read about the phenomenon of cellular memory in donor organs. That casts a different light on the plot, turning it from a sad love story into a cosmic experience.

There are a few more. This is the scene when mom, daughter in the doctor's office:

Doc: So, tell me about the diet. Keeping up with the fruit and veg?
Daughter: Yeah, fine.
Mom: She's eating rubbish when she is outside. When she's at home, she's eating my food, and it's good.

Doc: I'm sure it is. What about sleep?
Daughter: It's all right.
Mom: She never sleeps.

Doc: Exercise?
Daughter: Religiously.
Mom: Not at all.

Doc: Alcohol?
Daughter: Every once in a while.
Mom: Oh, she's drinking like the pirate.

Doc: You say you're okay.
Daughter: Yep.
Doc: And your mother says the opposite. Who do I believe?
Daughter: Me, obviously.
Mom: Me, the mother, of course.
Are they mice?
- Yeah, I think so.
There must be a story attached to them. I'll have to find out one day.
