Violet is a shy teenager who dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion for singing. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a local singing competition that will test her integrity, talent, and ambition. Driven by a pop-fueled soundtrack, it is a visceral and stylish spin on the Cinderella story.

This movie is just a decent movie. Nothing too special, it's about a teen girl who tries an audition for a show then she gets the part, etc.

One of the better films made for teens. Not impressed though with the leading actress' performance or it's just how millennials act?

Enjoyed it immensely. Any one calling the story dark simply has no idea of what dark is. It can be called a Cinderella story only to the point where the protaganista capitalizes on a chance to advance given ever so rarely---and with talent, grit and heart competes for the proverbial brass ring. Elle does turn in a great performance and Minghella has written/directed a solid first movie. Well done.

I must admit I'm an old man of eight decades and would have loved to see more of the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. Been there only twice at age eleven, and then again at age twenty six. At the start of the movie I was not sure what made me pick this one. But!! you know I really liked the beat of the music. I'm sure the younger generation will like this one. Make sure you watch the extra's

Boring movie about beautiful girl with average voice becomes superstar. Been there and done that. Awful.

My main issue with this film is that it feels quite incomplete... Like snapshots that don't come together to create a focused image. Despite that, Elle was fantastic as always. If you like guilty pleasures, this one is for you.

I loved this movie! I didn't even finish it, before I had to request the soundtrack from the library. The music was wonderful and the story was well done - Elle Fanning did amazing, unsurprisingly.

This movie did not receive good reviews, but I thought it was pretty entertaining and had an interesting message. Some of the critics complained that it was too dark for a movie about a teen singing competition, but I thought the darkness was unexpected and gave the film more meaning. I also enjoyed the songs in the movie and the European elements.

Almost filmed as a documentary about the quest of a small town teen singer in a talent competition program. While there are the usual characters as the unlikely protagonist, her single mom, an unorthodox voice coach and a variety of competitors, the script lacks drama and excitement. Once the star Elle Fanning has performed all her pop songs more than satisfactorily, the rest of her role is easy as pie compare to her recent films as the leading actress:
The Neon Demon (2016) ★★½
Galveston (2018) ★★★½

Don't miss the extra footage soon after the credit has begun rolling.

You will be adjudicated, should I say, on your vocal and dance abilities. Don't worry, it's still a singing competition. I saw a few faces go then. As you well know, it's the first time we've come to the island. So it's really just a chance for you guys to show us what we've been missing all this time, yeah? Ultimately, only five of you will be invited back tomorrow to perform for Jules and the show's producers Okay, any questions, please do speak to your team leaders. That's what they're here for. And other than that, good luck. Break a leg.
Today's the audition for the audition, so to speak. There's another two stages before the final round.
She's through to the next round. She needs to practice. Work on her breathing.
When you're onstage, you are exposed. Your voice is important, yes. But it's your soul, your spirit, that people are seeing.
Sing from your heart. Open your eyes. Connect with the audience.

To maximize our capacity to sing, we must first maximize our capacity to breathe. So, place your hands on your waist, so that your fingers are pointing toward your navel. And now... feel the tension release. As you breathe in, let the air move through the base of your diaphragm first. Now... your hands will slowly rise and fall with each breath. Exhale. Feel extension of your body, yeah? Now... we count down from five, breathing out slowly.
-Ah, it's opera.
Here we are on the Isle of Wight, a small but picturesque island off the coast of England. And behind me, the home of Violet Valenski, ...
You know... life comes down to these moments, Violet. Don't take them for granted.
And you don't look in camera, it makes the audience uncomfortable. Make sure you focus on your breathing like we practiced.
