A woman from Nantucket returns home to find that reunions aren't always so simple. Growing up, Lara always dreamed of leaving Nantucket to become a writer. Now that she's a bestselling novelist living in New York City, she realizes that success isn't what she thought it would be. Confused, and with a harrowing case of writer's block, Lara misses the island way of life more than ever. But going back to Nantucket out of the blue isn't so easy, as a deep rift with her childhood best friend, Isabelle, has kept the two from speaking for years. When her mother is laid off from her job and becomes depressed, Lara reluctantly comes home, leaving a failed relationship and hopefully her other troubles behind. But facing her estranged best friend is harder than she expects. And falling for Isabelle's brother, Sebastian--who was also Lara's teenage crush--only complicates things. Lara soon realizes that she must remedy the mistakes of her past in order to find true happiness.

Fun Beach Read perfect for right now. One of the more interesting by Nancy Thayer.

I love Nancy Thayer and this book didn't disappoint.

I am quite disappointed in 'Surfside Sisters'.

I loved the childhood Keely and Isabelle, with their deep friendship, their shared dreams, the adult way they worked to achieve them and their love of words.

I hated their mean girl act as adults. Both are too self-absorbed and more juvenile than when they were children, with their constant whining. As adults they are both wholly unlikable. The 'young love' is trite and more hook-up than love.

The ending is just so disappointingly predictable and trite.

'Surfside Sisters' took frivolous beach read to a new level, one NOT to aspire to. With the utter awfulness of 'A Nantucket Wedding', 'Surfside Sisters' makes TWO disappointing books in a row for Nancy Thayer, which is ironic because it's about writers that need to remember their roots to write well. Has Nancy lost all her kind southern friends from which to draw on the grace, maturity and loyalty about which she used to write?

3 stars, barely

This book was an intriguing story on the dynamics of female friendships. The story walks through so many different emotional challenges that can come up in a friendship in a very creative plot.

This book surprised me. We meet Keely and Isabelle when they are young and both want to write novels. They are BFFs all through school, but then things get complicated. Sometimes it seems as if they are competing against each other and in the background is the crush Keely has on Isabelle's elusive older brother Sebastion. We get to know Keely especially well and it is a treat to spend time both in Nantucket and NYC through the course of the story. Will make a great beach/vacation read!
