"In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery -- Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along"-- Provided by publisher.

A fantastic graphic memoir, chronicling Krosoczka's growth as an artist through his childhood.

Recommended by librarians. Excellent book. Definitely deals with older child/grown up topics, so maybe read first. Great at starting important conversations.

This book made me cry. The timeline from Jarrett's birth to his teenager-hood was heartwrenching and portrayed with such clear description and artful purpose. Teens who enjoy self-reflection and are facing the desperation of trying to fulfill a dream will enjoy this hopeful coming-of-age memoir.

This is a biography of author Jarrett’s life. He had a drug addicted mother,
absent father, and a set of wonderful grandparents that helped raise him.
With all of this, you can imagine he faced his fair share of trials and
tribulations. The story encompasses the majority of his life, which makes it
such an enjoyable read. You see how these challenges can impact an
individual’s life for years to come. If you are looking for a bit of a deep dive
into someone else’s life experience, definitely give this one a try!

If your teen is looking for a book to read, this is it!

I love the love between imperfect, flawed humans. Krosoczka shares his imperfect - some would judge highly dysfunctional family with the reader and the love that sustains them.

This book is deep and heartbreaking. It is a beautifully illustrated memoir that follows the life of a young boy as he comes of age. His life is difficult and this book deals with many of the brutal pains in his life, such as drug abuse, alcoholism, child abuse, teen pregnancy, and bullying. What I liked most about this book was the growth that happened within the main character--it was clear he matured and found his path. Although dark, I would recommend this book to teenagers.

Some people might have liked this book, but I did not. I thought it was too dark and I am a very sensitive person. Then again, this is a more mature read, and I am only twelve.

This is an engaging book about the story of jarret krozoka’s childhood. He goes through many troubles including losing his mom and learning that she was a heroin addict. This non fiction story does have some heavy topics and shouldn’t be read by anyone younger than 11. Overall a really great book.
