The Finest Hours
DVD - 2016 | Widescreen
In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel.

alone is worth the price of admission.
An extraordinary little gem of a movie that somehow slipped under the public's and critics' radar. Enjoy it for what it is --- a great Disney romantic thriller about a heroic rescue by brave sailors of the US Coast Guard. I certainly did. We need more understated movies like this and a lot fewer mindless superhero, "fast and furious", and zombie/vampire/werewolf serial sequels (is that a tautology?) I've reserved the book and look forward to reading it. Hopefully, it will fill in the holes in the plot.
Somehow I missed hearing about this completely when it was released in theatres, but I recently stumbled across it. This movie is based on a real-life maritime tragedy from 1952, when a freighter was ripped in two during a storm and the coast guard attempts a rescue. The story is quite gripping overall and the scenes with the doomed freighter during the storm are very exciting and well done. There are three pretty distinct storylines during the movie: the story of the stranded crew on the freighter, the story of the coast guard vessel attempting the rescue, and a romance storyline between the lead coast guardsman and a nice girl he had met. I agree with the many critics who found the romance storyline very tepid, dull and predictable. The other two storylines are very compelling, however, and overall the film is very entertaining.
Awesome action adventure love story based on a true story. LOVED it!
I love movies that are based on true stories.
1952: a sinking tanker broken in half with 32 men aboard during a vicious winter storm, a small rescue boat with only room for 12 trying to reach them against all odds: ways better than any mission impossibles and it's all true: check out the final credits. SFX a bit unreal but hey, this is Disney!
I'm a sucker for a story about true heroics. I liked this movie. I thought it was well made, good acting, harrowing and shiver me timbers cold. Though it is another example of glad I didn't spend the bucks seeing it on the big screen. I like an epic for that.
A good movie
A bunch of people who repeat lines until they get them correct try to mimic East Coast accents whilst pretending to be in love, trapped on a sinking ship, & saving victims on said sinking ship. Some of the action scenes are well-made, but this film does nothing more than educate us about a rescue that actually took place & it labours the point so tediously that you can doze off & not miss a thing. I give it 2 & ½ snoozes. Great flick if you're looking to get some shut-eye.
Excellent true movie. Unbelievable what these men did. True heroes.
