Couldn't finish. What seems to be an attempt at self deprecating humor smacks of pride in stupidity.

Issa Rae is just as awkward and funny in this book as she is in her HBO series, "Insecure," and her web series, "Awkward Black Girl." She is a rising star in the comedy world.

Enjoyable overall; I skipped a few sections here and there.

Rae currently has the show "Insecure" on HBO. You also might like Phoebe Robinson's "You Can't Touch My Hair."

I decided to read Issa Rae's book, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl after seeing several posts on social media about her new HBO show, Insecure. Given her rising popularity in tv & film production, I was interested in learning more about her, specifically how she got to where she is today. Sadly, I have never watched any episode of Insecure or her popular YouTube series after which this book was named. However, that didn't negatively impact my ability to appreciate her story, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I thought it was very funny (I literally laugh aloud several times) and well-written. I love the book's "I know this sounds crazy but I'm so serious" tone. It was refreshing for a memoir (this is a memoir right?); and in my opinion, it works in her favor.

Overall, I'm glad that I read her book despite not having watched any of her on-screen work. Issa Rae is obviously a very ambitous and creative woman that wants to carve out her own path in television. If nothing else, read it for a good laugh.

I guess I'm not exactly the intended audience for this book but that only goes to show that 'genre' is a lot more fluid than one might think. I really enjoyed the essays here. They seem light and witty on the surface but many of them hold a much deeper feeling, especially when she writes about her parents.
