In 2012 Dave Grohl purchased the legendary Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios. The board, built in 1972, is considered to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash, Guns and Roses, Metallica, and many other musical legends. This tells the story of real rock history, and celebrates the music, as Grohl gathers some of rock's greatest artists to collaborate on a new album using this classic console.

Somewhat interesting, but there are better documentaries and books about rock and roll.

A wonderful behind-the scenes look at one rather important audio recording studio...

Where else would anyone ever think to put Trent Reznor and Barry Manilow? Dave Grohl really did his homework and what a piece of equipment he purchased! Worth watching more than once!

That was fantastic. Apparently I owe a whole lot of my musical taste and the existence of some of my favourite albums to Sound City - a recording studio and the custom ordered Neve sound board. Analog and unforgiving, if you couldn't play or sing, there was nothing to hide behind and no way to make you sound like something you weren't.

There really are three parts to this documentary. The history of the thing, the invasion of the digital age and how that changed things forever when it came to how albums were recorded, and the re use of the equipment. I remember liking a Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney song that managed to run away with a Grammy despite no one having heard of it and it was off an album that Dave Grohl and company made with the Neve board. Yeah, I may have just gone and bought that album.

If you're a music lover, specially one of bands like Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, and and whole bunch of other artists (seriously, the amount of hit records this place has is astounding) you'll love it. It's a great film to feel nostalgic too as much as sad and hopeful about. Highly recommended.

A must-see for amateur musicologists and rock fans. Learn some of the recording secrets that made this place legendary. 'Nevermind' was recorded here. Magical; legendary; holy.

I completely agree with the earlier review submitted by sweetlou. The first hour of this documentary is definitely interesting, complete with unexpected cameos by some of the biggest names in rock and roll history.

However, the last hour was booooorrring. While I am sure music enthusiasts would find Mr. Grohl's modern liaisons with some of these legends interesting, those of us who rented the DVD for the history probably wouldn't.

Unless you're a music enthusiast, I wouldn't recommend this doc.
