Sex, secrets, scandals, and a stormy love between Catherine of Aragon and Harry, who would become the legendary King Henry VIII. This fictionalized take is highly interesting partly because I know "the rest of the story" - their passion fizzled out and Henry would go on to marry five more times. I love the plotlines built on fact but also all the creative license added in, the "extra" fictional things. Laura Carmichael (from Downton Abbey) is wonderful as Lady Maggie Pole, and Charlotte Hope absolutely shines as Princess Catherine. I can't wait to watch more.
Historically accurate it is not: with generous liberties taken with known events, and all of the women sassy postfeminist protagonists who take charge of their destinies like modern 21st century heroines. That being said, if you can let the historical accuracy part go, this is a highly entertaining Tudor soap opera. Strong cast, beautiful sets, fun to watch.
Disc 1 was scratched and I couldn't watch much of episodes 1 and 2.
4* Love this series. Looking forward to Season 2!
Season 2 is out on Netflix now!
I really enjoyed this series. It is so good.
This is a fairly entertaining series about Catherine of Aragon; the daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand who arrives in England to marry the Tudor heir Arthur but eventually ends up with future King Henry VIII. The story sort of stays within the general historical record but there is a few tweaks here and there to make it a bit more soap operaish with Catherine and Henry being thwarted from marrying in every episode by the evil Tudor dowager queen. Charlotte Hope(Myranda in Game of Thrones) is quite charismatic in playing the feisty and clever Catherine who overcomes all the Tudors complicity to take her destined place as the Queen of England.
True or not, or even semi-true, I enjoyed it!
This a typical effort to turn history into a soap opera, so that any resemblance to the actual history of England is purely coincidental. The production values are high, but the stellar cast can only deliver what the script requires. Inaccuracies abound, but just imagine that the story happened in a parallel universe and you can enjoy it for what it is.
