Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are only valued if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now.

Abridged dramatization! No thanks.

this is NOT an audiobook for a Atwood novel. Only 2 disks, it's like a short play ! Disappointing.

The library description says this is unabridged. It also says, "dramatization". When I saw it was only 2 CDs I realized this is not the whole book. The Claire Danes audio version is 11 hours.

I wanted to love this story so much - and honestly, I did love the story. But this audiobook is a dramatized telling, not just a single voice actor telling the story and playing the characters. With the voice actors switching, with music and with sound effects, this audiobook CD constantly pulled me out of Margaret Atwood's impressive tale. Just get the book! Or at least a version by a single voice actor.

An interesting short story. Stayed in my thoughts long after it was done.
