This is an accurate and often haunting picture of life in Germany's POW camps. These stories are their stories (with numerous quotes from these POW's), stories of men with incredible courage, many of whom suffered immensely and a very many who died. Some of the details are heart breaking and difficult to read, especially the numerous violations of the Geneva Convention.
It is somewhat difficult to follow any single story as Greenfield jumps back and forth through the book due to the structure that he has chosen.
However, in the final analysis, as Greenfield states these POW's "defended themselves daily against despair brought on by insults, violations of their Geneva rights, debilitating hunger and the misery of the Hunger marches" and "they should not be forgotten" and for that reason this is a book that should be read.
